The unframed print
The most famous heroic rider in art, and the king who rode to save a city that was not his own.
Inspired by The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien (1955). Dawn on the Pelennor Fields. Theoden of Rohan rears up on a rocky rise before the last great charge, the green banner with the white horse flying over his riders, and the White City standing against the mountain behind him. An inspired-by print: nothing in it is taken from any film.
A Neoclassical heroic oil painting after David: smooth glazed paint, crisp drawing, a storm-torn sky and a horse rearing on the edge of the rock. The rock in the corner is carved with THEODEN, HELM and EORL, the kings of Rohan, the way David carved the names of great generals into his.
After Jacques-Louis David, Napoleon Crossing the Alps (1801). I followed his composition on purpose. His emperor has become the king of Rohan, the Alps have become the Pelennor, and the carved names are Rohan's own.
I create each scene with AI image tools, then art-direct and refine it until it feels right, and I carved the inscription in afterwards. It's a print of a digital artwork after David, not a David and not a hand-painted original. A typeset caption under the picture names the book, the scene and the painting it follows. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the margin.
A4 or A3, unframed or framed. Every print is made to order on heavyweight 200gsm+ archival matte paper at full print quality (300 DPI). Frames are slim pine, in black, white or natural oak, with shatter-resistant plexiglass and no mount, so the print's own cream margin is the border. Framed prints arrive ready to hang. Free delivery to the UK and US, tracked on most orders. Small unframed prints going to the US are sent untracked.
