The story behind LOTR by Bruegel: Mordor

The scene

A black sky lit orange from below, the ring of jagged mountains, tiny orc soldiers, siege towers and smoking forges, and the Nazgul on their fell beasts circling in a red sky. Look for the small details, as the painters of the sixteenth century did.

The style

A Flemish panel painting of the 1560s: a crowded, busy world seen from above, hundreds of small figures, and fire and smoke everywhere.

The inspiration

From The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954 to 1955), the land of Mordor. The look comes from Bruegel's Dulle Griet (1563): fine crowded detail, a fire-lit hell and fantastical little creatures.
