The scene
In 1861 Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management put the Victorian kitchen in order, with coloured plates to show the cook what she was buying. These three plates follow that manner: Plate I, Lemons; Plate II, Mushrooms; Plate III, Herbs, each with its numbered caption.
The style
A stipple-engraved botanical plate: colour built up in tiny dots for soft, true-to-life shading, on clean cream paper.
The inspiration
The look comes from Pierre-Joseph Redoute's stipple engravings for Les Liliacees (1805 to 1816), for their fine dotted shading and clear botanical drawing. The lemons, mushrooms and herbs are my own.

How it's made
A print of a digital artwork in the style of an early nineteenth-century botanical stipple engraving, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
