The unframed print
A cold hand at the glass, and a voice outside: let me in.
Featured in: Halloween prints and gothic gifts for book lovers
From Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (1847), Chapter 3. Lockwood, sleeping in the old oak bed, is woken by a fir branch tapping at the window. He breaks the pane to stop it, and a small, ice-cold hand closes on his own. A voice sobs, "Let me in, let me in!"
A still Romantic interior in oil: deep shadow, a single window and the quiet before something happens.
The look comes from Caspar David Friedrich's Woman at a Window (1822), in the Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin: the still figure, the dark frame and the cold light beyond. The hand, the lattice and the snow are my own.
A print of a digital artwork in the style of an early nineteenth-century Romantic oil painting, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
