The scene
From Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte (1847), Chapter 23. On a midsummer evening Jane walks in the orchard at Thornfield, under the old horse-chestnut, with the dark house behind her. Rochester joins her and offers marriage, and she answers with the line every reader remembers: "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me."
The style
A nocturne in a few thin blues: soft, misty paint, quiet shapes and the whole night held in one colour.
The inspiration
The look comes from James McNeill Whistler's Nocturne: Blue and Silver, Chelsea (1871), in the Tate: the thin blue-grey haze, the lights barely there, everything hushed. The orchard, the tree and the figure are my own.

How it's made
A print of a digital artwork in the style of a nineteenth-century tonal oil nocturne, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
