The scene
Rows of low slate-roofed houses and a tall pit-head wheel trailing a thin thread of smoke, soft mist across rough grass, a wire fence running into a dark wood on the right, and a gold edge on the sky. There are no figures and no weapons.
The style
A nineteenth-century French rural painting: a low horizon, soft, earthy browns and greens, and a hushed, golden evening light over the fields.

The inspiration
Inspired by The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. The look comes from Jean-Francois Millet's The Angelus (1857 to 1859): flat country light, a hush over the fields and a small human world under a big sky.

How it's made
A print of a digital artwork in the style of a nineteenth-century rural landscape in oils, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
