The story behind Wormsign

The scene

From Dune by Frank Herbert (1965), Book One. A spice harvester is still working on the open sand when the wormsign comes, and the worm rises and takes the whole machine. Of every scene in Dune, this is the one I most wanted to see on a wall. My favourite detail is the two tiny cloaked figures on the far dune, just watching.

The style

I gave it the look of a Japanese colour woodblock from the 1830s: crisp outlines, flat colour with the grain of the wood showing through, a soft blue sky fading into cream. A world this vast seemed to need that calm, careful style to hold it.

The inspiration

The look comes from Japanese colour woodblock prints of the 1830s: their keyed outlines, flat colour and woodgrain. The worm, the harvester and the desert are my own.

Style reference: an 1830s Japanese colour woodblock print. Keyed outlines and flat colour, for the dunes of Arrakis.

How it's made

I design each scene and refine it until it feels right. It's a print of a digital artwork made in the style of a woodblock print, not a hand-cut woodblock or an original print. Each one carries my printed "Chapter & Scene" signature in the margin.
