The story behind LOTR by Turner: The Grey Havens

The scene

At the end of the Third Age the Ringbearers go over the sea from the Havens of Mithlond. The ship sails west into the sunset, and Sam, Merry and Pippin are left on the shore. Soft, misty and luminous, the light spills across the water and the horizon dissolves.

The style

A Romantic oil painting of the 1830s: a blazing sky, soft light melting into the water, and a ship small against all that colour.

The inspiration

From The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien (1955), the chapter The Grey Havens. The look comes from Turner's The Fighting Temeraire (1839) at the National Gallery: the pale ship, the blaze of sunset and the quiet low shore.
