The print
The end of a long road, and the ones who stay behind.
At the end of the Third Age the Ringbearers go over the sea from the Havens of Mithlond. The ship sails west into the sunset, and Sam, Merry and Pippin are left on the shore. Soft, misty and luminous, the light spills across the water and the horizon dissolves.
A Romantic oil painting of the 1830s: a blazing sky, soft light melting into the water, and a ship small against all that colour.
From The Return of the King by J. R. R. Tolkien (1955), the chapter The Grey Havens. The look comes from Turner's The Fighting Temeraire (1839) at the National Gallery: the pale ship, the blaze of sunset and the quiet low shore.
A print of a digital artwork in the style of a nineteenth-century Turner-style oil painting, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
