The print
One small figure, one very large dark.
In the Mines of Moria, Gandalf stands alone on the bridge to hold the Balrog while the Fellowship escapes. It is the standoff, before the fall: a thin span of stone, tall carved pillars going up into the dark, and the Fellowship tiny on the far stair.
A Victorian wood engraving: dense, dramatic line, deep blacks and firelight, the darkness drawn as finely as the flames.
From The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954), the chapter The Bridge of Khazad-dum. The look comes from Gustave Dore's Paradise Lost (1866) engravings: fine hatching, deep blacks and one source of burning light.
A print of a digital artwork in the style of a nineteenth-century black wood engraving, not an original. Each carries my printed Chapter & Scene signature.
