The story behind Cair Paravel at Dawn

Cair Paravel at Dawn art print in the style of an Aivazovsky seascape: a tall white castle with slender towers on a rocky headland above the sea, the sun rising in a pink, gold and turquoise sky, gulls and gentle waves on a pale beach.Video coming soon

The scene

Tall white towers with pennants stand on a rocky headland where the river meets the sea. Gulls wheel round the spires, small waves roll up a pale beach, green hills fold away into the distance and the whole sky glows pink, gold and turquoise. There is no one in the picture.

The style

A Romantic seascape of the 1850s: luminous sunrise colour, translucent rolling waves and a glowing sky that seems to light the whole sea.

The inspiration

Inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. The look comes from Ivan Aivazovsky's Sunrise in Feodosia (1855): sea light, glowing water and a huge morning sky, painted in luminous oils.
