The story behind The Silmarillion by John Martin: The Fall of Gondolin

The scene

Morgoth's armies find the hidden city of King Turgon at night, with fire, wolves, Balrogs and great dragons. The city is burned and broken, and Tuor and Idril lead a remnant of the people away by a secret way. The picture shows the city and the flight.

The style

An apocalyptic Victorian oil painting: a huge landscape, a sky torn with fire and storm, and tiny figures caught in the middle of it.

The inspiration

From The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien (1977), the tale Of the Fall of Gondolin. The look comes from John Martin's The Great Day of His Wrath (1851 to 1853): enormous architecture, an apocalyptic sky and tiny figures.
